Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free multiplayer and singleplayer first person shooter, the successor of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is fun, old school deathmatch gameplay and also to allow map/geometry editing to be done cooperatively in-game.

The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).

Origin of the name

The story would have the authors wondering how to name the project while they were at the restaurant. As the question did not seem to matter, and probably also to mark the German origin of the project, they would have simply given him the name of their favorite dish they were eating:

“Sauerbraten is a German dish made from beef with sweet and sour sauce. This is one of the great German dishes, comparable for example to beef bourguignon or rooster wine in French cuisine. “

Game system
Sauerbraten has extremely simple and extremely fast “gameplay” – which makes it a good kicker but can cause nervous problems to the unsuspecting public. It can be played alone or in multiplayer. Solo, it is of little interest, if not to train. Note however that it has a single player mode from its predecessor to face enemies without any artificial intelligence. According to the main developer, this game mode may disappear in favor of the one using the bots (robots), smarter.
